You may be trying to seperate the wrong part, the flat top piece that is solid black should pop off fairly easily. Hold the barrel and push up on the bottom of the piercer itself. Good luck!

I haven't been able to separate the two pieces after learning how to pop the whole piece out by pushing from the bottom. I'm scared I'll break it. So what I've been doing is I run the cleaning disk after making a milk-type drink for about a week and then after a week I push out the piercing unit and run under hot water in the sink.

But, like I said, I haven't been able to separate the two pieces for fear of breaking it. On my Braun machine, it's very easy to separate.

I have a Braun, but here is what the User Guide says about cleaning the piercing unit:

Remove the T DISC holder (8a), the
piercing unit (8b) and the drink outlet
(8c) and clean thoroughly. All these parts
can also be cleaned in the dishwasher.
When preparing a number of drinks one
after another, the piercing unit may be
manually cleaned quickly and easily
under running water.

You can find trouble shooting guides and a pdf copy of your manual here.

Do you pull straight out or do you have to twist too? I was afraid to use too much force so I stopped. I'm not sure how much cleaner I could get if I separate the pieces.

Hummm, I also only rinse it as one piece in general. Seems like breaking it down all the time would weaken it?

I usually rinse the piercing unit with hot water after several coffees or right after I make a latte or chocolate. Do I need separate all the parts of the piercing unit when I rinse it? I normally just leave it as 1 piece.
